Marotta Selected as a New Jersey Top Workplace for 2023

Marotta Controls was named a Top Workplace in New Jersey by NJ Advanced Media (NJ.com) for 2022 & 2023. The state-wide recognition program is based solely on employee survey responses & feedback.

Marotta Controls’ performance-driven leadership strategy strives to instill a culture across all business units where new ideas and innovative concepts can be explored. Embracing that level of inspired creativity in a collaborative environment and focusing on employee engagement is largely what has influenced the company’s organic growth since it was founded in 1943.

Our History

To support America’s fight in World War II, the late Patrick Marotta, founder of Marotta Controls, began making machined components in the basement and garage of his Boonton, New Jersey home. Later that year he bought a 5-acre site in Montville with an abandoned two-room schoolhouse and transferred operations to that site.

Today Marotta Controls operates from this same location in a modern 135,000 square foot complex on an expanded 25 acre site.

The company continued to power advanced fluid control technologies, and quickly became sought after to contribute its engineering and design to the most advance programs of their time – the first operational rocket, the first rocket plane, the first intercontinental ballistic missile, the first Polaris submarine, the first jetliner, the first Tiros weather satellite, the first Aegis cruiser, the deepest diving undersea vehicles and the first Trident submarine. Marotta control systems have flown in space, and delivered the first man to the moon.

1940s

Marked the start of Marotta’s adventure in the design, development and manufacture of valves and systems for critical performance, environment, envelope, size, weight and power constraints for the fledgling rocket/space industry. In 1947 the company developed high pressure fuel control valves for the Bell X-1, making history alongside Chuck Yeager with the first supersonic flight.

1950s

In the early 50s, Marotta offered its first high-pressure liquid and gas solenoid valves.  In the mid 50s, Marotta developed the balanced poppet valve concept and the 6000 psi solenoid valve.  In the late 50s, Marotta extended its pressure regulating products to include electrical remote control applications.

Marotta invested heavily in people and facilities to meet the growing need for our fluid control solutions.  As Marotta’s reputation for excellence grew, the business expanded to include the chemical, metals processing and offshore oil industries throughout the world.

1960s

In the early 60s, Marotta approached the United States Navy with the idea of manifolds for shipboard high and low pressure air stations.  Continuing in the early 60s, Marotta introduced its first closed-loop pneumatic control system.

Throughout this decade, Marotta was a major contributor to the Gemini, Saturn Apollo and Lunar Module Missions helping to land our astronauts on the moon and return them safely to Earth by providing hundreds of valves on launch sites, engines and miscellaneous spacecraft systems.

1970s

… In the early 70s, marotta again provided a highly innovative valve solution – a valve sensor for tanks and other armored vehicles that rapidly responded to a sudden bright flash of light, fast enough to discharge pressurized halon and prevent an explosion caused by a live round.

Marotta also continued its support of our nation’s space program by supplying valves for the Apollo-Soyuz mission and the Space Shuttle.  Marotta solidified its reputation with the US Navy with high-pressure control valves and manifolds on the FFG-7 Oliver H. Perry Class and DD-963 Spruance Class ships, and Los Angeles Trident Class submarines.

1980s

Throughout the 80s, Marotta continued to be a dominant supplier to the US Navy and was recognized and awarded for its quality and service to the Navy with the Aegis Shipbuilding Excellence Award.  Marotta continued its role as a major supplier of valves and manifolds to the US Navy on the DDG-51 Arleigh Burke Class guided missile destroyer.

1990s

In the early 90s, Marotta was recognized as a premier supplier to NASA with the award of the George M. Low Quality and Excellence Award, NASA’s most prestigious supplier award.  Marotta secured and essential role on the International Space Station with orders for valves and valve electronics on the Active Thermal Control System, vacuum valves and proportional flow control valves for temperature control.

Also in this decade, Marotta was awarded several Small Business Innovative Research grants, many of which related to new technology development for the launcher and satellite markets.  We invested heavily in pneumatic stores ejection components for military aircraft, a new technology promising significant life-cycle cost savings for future aircraft and weapons platforms.

2000s

Recognizing that prevailing attitudes toward procurement had changed, with the turn of the century we articulated a new approach to operations.  No longer content with producing and selling high quality fluid control “components”, we created a new “systems” culture within Marotta.

Building on our heritage high-pressure know-how, we worked closely with our partners to develop our first complete pneumatic system, M-PACT.  (Marotta’s Pure Air Compression Technology.)  Launched in 2005, the M-PACT exceeded our expectations, and was selected for use in the P-8A MMA and F/A-18 respectively.

2010s

Leveraging upon pneumatic systems capabilities and infrastructure to manufacture higher volumes of sub-systems on-site Marotta invested in expanding our technology portfolio to include electronic motor controls, power conversion and control actuation systems for aircraft and tactical systems and well as hypersonic vehicles.

Marotta’s performance in designing and developing power electronics was recognized by prominent industry leaders including Lockheed Martins outstanding small business supplier and Northrop Grumman’s platinum source supplier.

Additionally, Marotta leveraged its legacy in solenoid valves for space applications to launch its CoRe® Flow Controls product line for reusable launch vehicles the emerging commercial space market.
